Retain weekly rubbish collection in Auckland

Retain weekly rubbish collection in Auckland
The Issue
The proposal to shift Auckland's rubbish collection from a weekly schedule to a fortnightly one is causing considerable concern for many residents. Weekly rubbish collection is vital for maintaining hygienic living conditions in our communities. Reducing the frequency poses a significant risk to public health and well-being.
Weekly collections help to minimize the build-up of waste, which can attract pests and contribute to unsightly and unpleasantly odourous environments. For a city as beautiful as Auckland, these concerns are far from trivial. Our unique natural landscape and urban environment should remain clean and pristine, representing the pride we as Aucklanders feel for our city.
The proposed fortnightly trial overlooks the challenges faced by larger households, families with young children, and residents with specific health requirements who generate more waste than others. Such households are already struggling with waste management and cannot afford to wait an additional week for waste removal. The financial burden of potentially increased private waste disposal and pest control services will further strain these families.
Additionally, such changes might not effectively address budgetary concerns if the costs simply shift to other areas, such as increased neighbourhood maintenance or public health services due to uncollected waste.
We urge the Auckland Council to reconsider the implications of this proposed trial. Instead, we suggest focusing on enhancing current waste management strategies, such as increasing recycling efforts and providing education on waste reduction. These measures are likely to have a more positive impact without compromising public health and safety.
Sign this petition to retain our weekly rubbish collection service, support healthier living conditions, and continue to keep Auckland beautiful and clean for all its residents. Together, we can ensure our city remains a place we can be proud of.
