The issue

The Swim, Sport and Leisure Creche Service in Geelong has been a cornerstone of support for many families like mine. As a mother navigating the postpartum journey with two young children, this service has been my trusted ally. With my husband working full-time in Melbourne and my parents residing in Europe for half of the year, the creche became my lifeline. It enabled me to attend necessary doctor’s appointments, manage swimming lessons for my toddler, and care for my baby. Not to mention, it provided me with the invaluable time needed for yoga sessions, vital for my mental health.

Geelong City Council's proposed closure of this creche would leave many parents, particularly those in situations like mine, in a challenging position. The impact of its closure is profound: not only does it threaten to strip away the independence and vital support network of countless families, but it endangers the overall wellbeing and mental health of parents who rely heavily on this service.

According to recent community surveys, over 70% of local families utilize this creche service regularly. Parents find solace in knowing there is a safe, reliable place where their children can be cared for while they manage their lives. The convenience of this service should not be underestimated, as it positively contributes to the local economy - allowing parents to work, attend education, and participate actively in community life.

We urge the Geelong City Council to reconsider the closure of the Swim, Sport and Leisure Creche Service. This decision not only affects the immediate families but has a broader impact on community cohesion and economic vitality. By retaining this service, the council would be investing in the wellbeing and future prosperity of Geelong.
