Retain the Bicycle Lanes on Ocean Drive, Resist Automotive Dominance

The Issue

Ocean Drive, known for its vibrant, diverse culture, and lively cycling community, is under threat. Plans are underway to remove the cherished bike lanes, making way for an automobile-dominated street once again. This would not only disrupt the unique atmosphere of the area but also pose a direct risk to biker safety.

Streets such as Ocean Drive can benefit significantly from dedicated bicycle lanes. The European Cyclists' Federation reports that 76% of people feel safer cycling on streets with specific cycling infrastructure. Emphasizing this, countries like the Netherlands, where cycling infrastructure is comprehensive, witness significantly lower cycling accident rates per km ridden (source: Pucher and Buehler, City Cycling, 2012).

Yet, these benefits would be undone if the planned vehicle-dominance is allowed to reclaim Ocean Drive. This move would be a step backward, putting cyclist lives at risk and dampening the vibrant community spirit.

We must come together to ensure Ocean Drive remains a safe, vibrant, and inclusive space for all. Please join us in urging our city leaders not to remove the bike lanes on Ocean Drive. Sign this petition now to make your voice heard. Your signature could be key to preserving our vital urban spaces and cyclist safety.

Thank you for reaching out on this issue. Please understand that this change that's being "forced" upon us by a judge and the county is not one that I support at all, and our city manager and city attorney are working diligently to find mutually agreeable solutions to keep the bike lanes in place. You may not know, but since I was elected, I have pulled together and am working with a cross-departmental "working group" to address micromobility issues holistically across the city. There are a lot of moving pieces but we are taking things bit by bit and changes is being effectuated. It will be an ongoing, slow, and thorough process with ultimately better conditions than exist now. So of course, I am not supporting removing bike lans. Vice-Mayor Tanya K.
