As an international student pursuing an on-campus degree at Deakin University, I find myself deeply concerned about the proposed changes to move language units entirely online. One of my majors is Chinese, and for students like me, the face-to-face format is not just a matter of preference; it is a vital component of effective language learning. Language acquisition thrives on direct interaction, real-time speaking practice, and the invaluable immediate feedback that only physical presence can provide.

Deakin University's decision to shift towards compulsory online delivery for language courses potentially undermines the core of language education. Moreover, this move puts international students, already navigating a new cultural and academic environment, at a particular disadvantage. According to Australia’s student visa regulations, there is a strict limit on the proportion of online study one can undertake while holding a student visa. Compulsory online units threaten to push students like me over this limit, jeopardizing our legal status and our education.

Studies have consistently shown that language learning is most effective in an immersive, interactive environment where spontaneous conversation and immediate correction occur – conditions best achieved in a classroom setting. Thus, transitioning language courses online might not only impede students' ability to learn but also degrade the quality of the degree programs that Deakin offers.

We urge Deakin University to retain the option for face-to-face language classes and to engage with students who are directly impacted by these changes before implementation. The university must recognize the unique needs of its international student body and ensure equitable access to the quality education we came here to receive.
