Retain Ag Teacher at Norman Public Schools

The Issue

My child is part of the Norman Public Schools' agricultural program and is passionate about pursuing clay shooting and farming careers. The students have been given a remarkable opportunity to explore livestock, horticulture, shop class, welding, food science, meat judging, speeches, quiz bowls and many other fields—it has truly sparked a love for agriculture in them. However, this cherished program is in grave danger due to the potential loss of one of our dedicated agriculture teachers by the 2025-2026 school year.

Norman Public Schools has proudly offered a variety of enriching programs, and it's disheartening to think that our support might falter. Currently, there are 90+ enthusiastic students depending on these invaluable opportunities, guided by one remaining teacher. Expecting one individual to handle the needs and aspirations of so many motivated students isn't just impractical—it's setting them up for distress and missing out on potential futures they might not otherwise envision.

The promises made to prioritize the agricultural program by directing bond resources toward the ag barn seem to be on shaky ground. Failing to retain our skilled teacher is a direct threat to this vision. We need to hold our district accountable to ensure that our children, such as mine, do not miss out on paths ripe with promise.

In addition to the profound educational impact, the scales of agriculture influence our economy and community strength. By supporting our kids now, we foster a robust foundation for future generations.

We call on Norman Public Schools administrators and the school board to take decisive action and retain our valued ag teacher. Let's ensure the continuation and ultimate thriving of these vital programs by preventing stress overload on faculty and ensuring the quality education that our burgeoning agriculturists deserve.
