Retailers Need to Change the Way They Sell Seafood

Retailers Need to Change the Way They Sell Seafood
The Issue
Our oceans are in crisis. Overfishing is one of the biggest threats facing our marine ecosystems today, with 33% of the world's assessed fisheries currently overfished, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Traditional fishing methods often result in entanglements that kill multiple different species, right whales being one of the most endangered.
Acoustic fishing methods offer a solution. They eliminate the need for vertical fishing line in the water column, reducing the amount of entanglements that occur. Using a deployable buoy system, crab and lobster fishermen are able to still haul their catch without harming any other animals in the meantime. However, many retailers still sell seafood caught using harmful traditional methods.
We call on all retailers such as Whole Foods, Walmart and King Soopers to take responsibility for their role in protecting our oceans. We urge them to commit to selling only seafood caught using acoustic fishing methods. This is not just about preserving marine biodiversity—it's also about ensuring that future generations can continue to enjoy seafood as part of a healthy diet.
Please sign this petition if you want retailers to make more responsible choices that protect our oceans and ensure sustainable seafood for all.
