Restructure the Olympics to Minimize Environmental Impact

The Issue

The games that everyone loves aren't as innocent as you might have thought. The Olympic Games, a global spectacle celebrated by millions, have an unprecedented environmental impact. From constructing new facilities to accommodating visitors' needs, the event generates significant waste and carbon emissions. According to a study by the University of Oxford, the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics resulted in 3.6 million tonnes of CO2 emissions - equivalent to approximately 820,000 cars driven for one year (source: University of Oxford). Additionally, post-event use of newly built infrastructure often falls short of expectations leading to 'white elephant' structures that serve little purpose while consuming resources for maintenance (source: Council on Foreign Relations). We propose a restructuring of the Olympic Games with an emphasis on sustainability. This could include reusing existing sports facilities worldwide or integrating more stringent environmental standards into planning and execution phases. By doing so, we can preserve both our planet's health and this cherished international tradition's integrity. Our goal with this petition is to just spread awareness of the waste that the olympics cause by leaving their stadiums in disarray after they leave. This has incredible impact on the cities and countries as it takes up space and is funded with the taxpayer money. Help our cause to make the olympics more environment friendly
