The issue
The Australian child support system has become an unfair burden on non-custodial parents like myself. For example, despite my efforts and expenses in providing for my children, the Child Support Agency (CSA) equates my income as solely responsible for 100% of the financial upkeep needed for raising them. Even though I provide my children with their own rooms, clothes, toys, devices, and even a motorbike, the CSA views my 7% care as contributing 0% to their upbringing costs. This discrepancy is not only unfair but undermines my role and influence as a caring parent.
The financial pressure increases year after year as my income rises, as does the cost that the CSA attributes to raising my children. While I understand the rationale behind the increasing costs as children grow, this system unfairly penalizes those of us who strive to provide the best for our children but are non-custodial parents.
This petition advocates for a critical and just restructuring of the child support system, emphasizing equity for all parents and the genuine needs of children. We propose implementing a standardized cost structure for raising children that considers specific age brackets, ensuring a fairer contribution from non-custodial parents. Moreover, the default should be a 50/50 custody split unless court orders specify otherwise, providing a more balanced and equal partnership in parenting unless proven otherwise necessary by the courts.
The current system often supports custodial parents disproportionately by supplementing Centrelink payments, rather than concentrating on what is truly necessary for the well-being and development of children. Our children deserve better than a system that financially benefits one parent at the expense of meaningful involvement and contribution from the other, often leaving non-custodial parents in a state of financial hardship.
