Restructure Puerto Rico's power grid for community benefit
The Issue
Growing up in Puerto Rico, I have seen firsthand the challenges my family and friends face due to the mismanagement of our power grid. It pains me to see them suffer while utility companies, instead of providing uninterrupted power and being a force for good, seem more intent on exploiting others for profit. My story reflects the experience of thousands of Puerto Ricans who are left to grapple with frequent blackouts, inflated bills, and an unreliable service.
In 2022 alone, Puerto Rico's Electric Power Authority reported that approximately 1.5 million residents experienced frequent power outages, causing disruptions to daily life and significant economic setbacks. The island's power grid, nearly 50 years old, is not just outdated but inefficient and burdened with a debt of over $9 billion.
For years, citizens have cried out for change – one that introduces an electrical company focused on creating a sustainable power solution that emphasizes efficiency, reliability, and transparency. However, to truly bring about this transformation, we need the government's support to prioritize the needs of its people over corrupt practices and profit-driven motives.
Our goal is to prompt legislative action that requires a comprehensive audit of the current power system, identify corrupt practices, and appoint a governing body that oversees the transition to a more sustainable and citizen-focused energy infrastructure. This new oversight should aim to rebuild trust, ensuring that all Puerto Ricans receive consistent, affordable, and reliable energy services.
We urge fellow Puerto Ricans and global supporters alike to raise their voice against the ongoing injustice faced by the citizens of Puerto Rico. We need your support to pressure the relevant authorities to act urgently.
Please sign this petition to help us fight for a brighter, more dependable future for the island of Puerto Rico.
