The Issue

My 12 yr old son was recently struck in the head with a heavy Stanley metal water bottle at school. What should have been an ordinary school day with him going home on the school bus opted in the school calling 911 and him leaving in an ambulance which became a frightening reminder that everyday objects can become dangerous weapons. This incident highlighted a growing concern for parents.

Across the country, incidents involving heavy stainless steel water bottles have resulted in severe injuries. These bottles, originally intended to keep water cool and safe for our children, are becoming hazards in the hands of active students. No parent should ever receive that dreadful call that their child has been hurt by an item meant simply to carry water.

In fact, statistics show a rise in school-related injuries involving everyday objects, with heavy water bottles being a significant contributor. A simple misjudgment or rough play can quickly turn these items into tools of harm—tools that we can control with the right measures in place.

We are therefore asking school districts to review and restrict the use of heavy metal water bottles. By considering alternatives such as lightweight plastic bottles or bottles with padding, schools can take a proactive step in safeguarding our children. Furthermore, implementing educational programs that teach students the importance of using everyday items responsibly can reduce such incidents drastically.

It’s crucial that our schools remain a safe environment for learning and growth, not a place where fear of injury lingers in the corners of classrooms and playgrounds. Protect our children’s safety by supporting this petition. Your signature can bring about necessary change and prevent unnecessary harm to countless students.
