I am a concerned resident of Lockport, NY, and I have witnessed the harmful effects that public access to Niagara County mugshots can have on individuals and their families. This online platform, while seemingly harmless at first glance, has become a breeding ground for abusive remarks based on race, religion, and appearance. It is not uncommon for the families of those depicted to be targeted as well.

This situation is not unique to our county. According to a study by the American Journal of Criminal Justice (2017), public shaming through mugshot publication can lead to significant psychological distress and social isolation for those involved. The same study also found that it disproportionately affects marginalized communities.

The abuse needs to stop now. We are calling on local authorities in Niagara County to restrict or remove these mugshots from public view. By doing so, we can protect our community members from undue harm during an already difficult time in their lives.
