Restrict Fireworks in Utah

The Issue

Every July, my community and I face the devastating impacts of unrestricted fireworks in Utah. The air becomes thick with smoke that clogs my sinuses, making it hard to breathe, while forest fires rage through our beautiful landscapes fueled by stray sparks from celebratory blasts. Friends and family who suffer from PTSD, struggle desperately to find peace amid the unexpected booms that echo through the night sky, disturbing their sleep and triggering traumatic memories.

The joyous celebration of Independence Day and Pioneer Day in Utah doesn't have to come at such a high cost to our health, safety, and environment. It’s time we consider the real impact of fireworks on our lives and make meaningful changes. Restricting the use of fireworks to just July 4th and July 24th will significantly reduce the risk of forest fires and improve air quality, allowing residents to breathe easier and enjoy cleaner air.

Moreover, limiting fireworks displays would also help ease the burden on those suffering from PTSD and noise-sensitive pets who cower at the disruptive noises. Air quality will improve, benefitting not only my family but the wider community who battles chronic illnesses exacerbated by air pollution.

The New York Times reported that fireworks contribute 42% to the air pollution in the US during holiday nights; a staggering fact that underscores the urgent need for change. By acting now, we can protect our precious landscapes in Utah from wildfires that have historically happened around this season, saving wildlife habitat and preventing property damage.

For the sake of our forests and personal well-being, let's band together to urge authorities to enforce this change. Restricting fireworks usage will make our community a safer, healthier, and happier place for everyone.

Please join me in asking our state lawmakers to take action and limit firework usage to two days in July—on the 4th and the 24th. Sign this petition and be part of the movement that prioritizes well-being and safety over momentary spectacle.
