Restrict Cellphones in Edina Public Schools from Bell to Bell
The Issue
As parents of school aged children in Edina Public Schools, we are intimately aware of our youth's struggle to maintain focus amidst the constant pings and buzzes of smart phones. The reality of our modern age is these devices have permeated every aspect of their lives.
According to Common Sense Media, children and teens face an onslaught of an average of over 200 app notifications a day. These distractions chip away at their capacity to fully engage and absorb academic material. It also interferes with meaningful face-to-face interactions with peers.
Through this petition, we advocate for a change that can reclaim our children's focus: banning cell phones in Edina Public Schools from the first school bell to the last. The “how” of this is still being determined, but our intent is that phones would be out of the hands of our kids. Not just in their backpack or locker, but in a secured bag or phone locker. By establishing this policy, we can minimize distractions, improve concentration, provide a space where students can connect with one another in person, and foster a more conducive learning environment. This policy will not just benefit the students, but also our teachers who routinely face the uphill task of keeping students engaged amidst digital interruptions.
We owe it to our children and our educators to create an atmosphere that prioritizes academics and interpersonal socialization. It's time we take this crucial step for the future of Edina's education and for the well being of our youth. Imagine the gift we can give our children: 7+ hours a day of NO PHONES.
Sign this petition to take cellphones out of our children’s hands in Edina Public Schools from bell to bell.
Help us reach our goal of 1,000 signatures.
Our plan is to bring this recommendation, along with the petition, in front of the school board on Monday, July 8th.
Note - there will absolutely be exceptions to this policy. Ex: children with medical needs or special circumstances.
