Restore Zulu Wars

The Issue

Roblox has, once before, taken down Zulu Wars for accusations of racism and anti-black violence. Once before, Roblox has also lifted that and admitted that the game was flagged incorrectly. Again, they have prevented our community from being able to access the game. This time however, they seem to be trying to outright censor the game, not contacting the community, which they had the courtesy to do last time, or allowing the owner to access it to even make changes. By signing, you say that this is wrong and Roblox has again made a mistake by putting this game under review.

I'd like to put a few other words of people who have made excellent points for this game in the past, starting with Aprevis, the owner of Zulu Wars on Roblox, who said, "My game Zulu Wars has, once again, been put ‘under review’ by Roblox. Zulu Wars is a respectful rendition of a very famous battle between the British and Zulu Empires in 1879, in which a small British garrison was attacked by the Zulu Army. The game treats the history it depicts with the utmost respect and authenticity, not demonising either side. The last time the game was put ‘under review’ (aka, shut down for however long Roblox want), it came off the back of a Twitter petition trying to shut down the game - but after several days of being ghosted by the admin directly responsible for the games removal, I contacted the main appeals department themselves - who saw the reality of the situation and put the game back up. Since then things have gone fine.. that is, until now. The game has been put under review again, but in contrast to normal Roblox procedure, I have not been given any reason for this or contacted about it at all, and I have also been blocked from accessing the game in the studio editor. This, I believe, is purposeful - and an attempt from the Roblox higher-ups to essentially sweep the game under the rug. I think it’s entirely unprofessional and a very sly way of approaching the issue, given that I have previously displayed complete willingness to change whatever aspects of the game they may require. We cannot allow a precedent to be set, whereby Roblox admins censor whatever content makes them uncomfortable, while destroying entire game communities and living-hoods in the process. Sign this petition to make a stand."

Also, from the original petition (which achieved over 1200 signatures shortly before the game was reinstated the last time) will give you a thorough description of the last time the game was taken down, in September through August last year.

"Zulu Wars is a historical game based off the famous Battle of Rorke's Drift 150 years ago, in which a small British garrison consisting of around 100 men defended their outpost located some miles within British territory against the the Zulu reserve Army - some 3000~ men, during the British invasion of Zululand. The game is intended purely for entertainment purposes, for those with a passion for history and this famous battle to play a game simulating the British defense of their camp against the odds. The game does not demonize or glorify either side of the conflict, and simply deals with the specific battle it is based off instead of the wider, more controversial history of the British invasion of Zululand."

"However, recently, a petition was spread around Twitter - largely by middle aged Americans - aimed to vilify, slander and attack our game - labelling us as 'white supremacists' who spread a message of 'hate and discrimination', which according to this petition has inspired gun violence towards African-Americans. They claim that the game depicts a massacre, in which you as a white player are tasked with 'hunting' native black people."

"As a result of this petition, which gained a considerable amount of traction from predominantly middle aged Americans who have clearly never played the game in their life, Zulu Wars was suddenly struck from Roblox after 4 years of operation for 'violations of [the Roblox] Terms of Use/Community Standards under Real-World Tragic Events and Discriminatory Content'. When we asked Roblox to elaborate on exactly what aspects of the game broke the rules, and how they would like us to remedy them, they of course ignored us - and after subsequent emails and multiple weeks waiting they have continued to ignore us and have refused to provide further information."

"The outlandish allegations from the petition and Roblox's removal reasons are obviously completely ridiculous and far removed from reality - something attested by anyone who has actually taken the time to play the game, or who understands the historical event the game is based off. Rorke's Drift was a defensive battle between two opposing armies, not a 'massacre' or a 'tragic event'. Just because one side were historically black does not automatically make anyone who fights against them within the game discriminatory, in the same way you are not automatically racist towards the French if you play as the British in a game about the Battle of Waterloo, for example. We've even received praise from many South Africans, both indigenous and non-indigenous, about the game's authenticity."

If you agree with what was said, I would strongly urge you to sign, even if you never played the game or intend to, to restore our lively community around the game that is many thousands strong. A community that is NOT racist, that understands just because they relive a war doesn't mean they have to support it and the terrible things that happened in it. Thank you for your help.
