Transgender Americans serve in our military — they deploy, follow orders, and risk their lives alongside their fellow troops. But a House vote last week could strip them, and their families, of the healthcare coverage they've earned.

On July 22, 2026, five House Democrats crossed party lines to vote for anti-trans amendments to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). Representatives Henry Cuellar and Vicente Gonzalez of Texas, Donald Davis of North Carolina, and Shomari Figures and Terri Sewell of Alabama voted to bar TRICARE, the military's healthcare program, from covering gender-affirming care for active-duty service members, military retirees, and their dependents. A second provision would ban transgender girls from sports teams at K-12 schools on military bases.

The contradiction is stark: trans people can enlist, serve in combat, and die for this country — but under these amendments, their families would be treated as second-class.

As Kara Corcoran, executive director of SPARTA Pride, an advocacy group for transgender military communities stated, "It's not just an attack on transgender kids. It's an attack on evidence-based care across military treatment facilities, and throughout the Department of Defense, not only here in America, but overseas," according to reporting by Erin in the Morning.

The NDAA now goes to the Senate, where these amendments can still be stopped. But the five Democrats who voted for them should hear from constituents first.
