The Issue

As a cashier in a grocery store, I've witnessed firsthand the impact that the shift from plastic to reusable grocery bags has had on hygiene, efficiency, and customer experience. It's clear that while the intent of reusable bags is rooted in sustainability, they bring about serious hygiene concerns that we can no longer ignore.

Reusable bags, by their nature, are often not cleaned frequently. A study by the University of Arizona and Loma Linda University found that 97% of individuals never wash their reusable bags, and those bags can harbor bacteria and pathogens. For both store staff and customers, this presents a risk, especially for those handling food items.

Moreover, the efficiency of checkout processes has decreased. The uniformity and ease of handling plastic bags allowed cashiers to pack groceries quickly, reducing wait times and improving customer service. Reusable bags come in various shapes and sizes, making packing more time-consuming and cumbersome.

Plastic bags are not without their faults, but there are alternatives to balance environmental concerns with the need for sanitary, efficient grocery experiences. Biodegradable or compostable plastic bags can serve as a compromise—offering the benefits of traditional plastic bags while minimizing environmental impact.

I urge grocery store owners and policymakers to revisit the ban on plastic grocery bags, and consider implementing biodegradable options instead. This solution would maintain the hygiene standards necessary to protect both workers and customers, improve the efficiency of store operations, and offer an environmentally-friendly alternative to traditional plastic.

Please join me in signing this petition to restore the use of plastic bags and ensure safer, more efficient shopping experiences for everyone.
