The Issue

Dear Chancellor Gabel,

We heard that you dissolved the OEDI office at the University and replaced it with the OIEW office. You also eliminated resources for diverse racial, cultural, and identity-specific groups. As former students, administrators, athletes, and donors, we are appalled that our university has compromised its academic mission and capitulated to government pressure.

This is unacceptable. As a diverse multi-cultural institution, PITT must take a stand and restore the original OEDI program so that all students have the support they need to thrive.

We personally understand the critical importance of the OEDI program. For many of us, it was Pitt’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion that attracted us to the school in the first place. As enrolled students, your support for our academic, athletic, and personal development enabled us to succeed and we are grateful. Future generations should have the same opportunities.

The OEDI program helped attract the high-achieving students and athletes that built the University's reputation and success. The NCAA reported that in 2023-24 black student athletes reached an all-time high of 86,451, representing 16% of all NCAA student athletes. A 2022 Gallup News Poll indicated that 20.8% of GenZ adults identify as LGBTQ. Other great Pennsylvania academic institutions such as the Pennsylvania State University have maintained an OEDI office and affirmed a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging as core parts of its mission.

Until the University upholds its responsibility to all students, we cannot personally or financially support the University. The OEDI should be restored and a public apology issued to students, alumni, and the public.

WE ARE BETTER THAN THIS!
