As a proud resident of San Diego and a parent with children in the San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD), I find it increasingly difficult to reconcile with the early start of our academic calendar. San Diego is renowned for its exceptional weather, yet our children are missing out on enjoying these beautiful summer months because our school year starts in mid-August. This not only deprives them of cherished summer memories, but also the opportunity to spend time with extended family who adhere to a more traditional post-Labor Day school start.

The current academic calendar structure is out-of-sync not only with other regions across the United States but also with seasonal climate realities. San Diego experiences some of its hottest days in late August and early September. Our school buildings, not equipped with adequate air conditioning, become uncomfortable and sometimes unsafe learning environments. Consequently, this impacts our children's academic performance and health. It also limits outdoor activities—essential for a balanced educational and social experience.

More profoundly, this early start disrupts family life and community engagements. With a substantial portion of the workforce and family networks following a post-Labor Day schedule, our children miss out on events and family reunions. This misalignment affects not just students but the entire community fabric.

We propose a reassessment of the school calendar, aligning with many other districts nationwide, to commence the school year after Labor Day. This would not only enhance the quality of our children's lives by allowing them to enjoy our uniquely San Diego summer but also align with climate and community dynamics, improving overall student well-being.

School board members and district superintendents have the power to effect this change. By restoring a post-Labor Day start date, we advocate for a more inclusive, considerate approach to our academic calendar that reflects both our community's needs and the educational priorities we hold for our children.
