Restore the original Bike Lane Plan for Addison Circle

The Issue

As a signer of this petition, you are asking the Addison City council and other town leadership to restore the Addison Circle Bike Lane plans. The original plans for Addison Circle included a fully separated bike lane that would remove a lane of traffic, but preserve the parking, allowing for all modes of transportation to utilize the street. However, due to backlash from a small group of residents, the town backed off from this plan.

Bike Lanes make for a safer, more productive, and more vibrant community in Addison Circle. Both residents, visitors and businesses would benefit from the increased accessibility and safety a bike lane can provide. Let's work together to make our street safe!

---------------------------------------------------------------

Addison Circle is an award winning mixed use neighborhood in the North Dallas area. It's currently home to over 2000 households and some of the highest rated businesses in the town. Addison Circle is also home to a thriving DART transit center and a Silver Line station set to open this Fall. From the start, it was designed to be walkable and accessible for both residents and visitors. The upcoming cotton belt trail and Transit Oriented Development will bring even more life to the district.

The bike lane design was extremely robust and designed to separate vehicle, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic through physical buffers such as trees and a parking lane for visitors. The reduction in vehicle lanes would have also served to reduce speeding through the neighborhood, which is a major concern for residents. The Addison Circle bike lane project was designed to connect to other bike lane projects in Addison that would connect under-served neighborhoods in Addison and many parts of North Dallas to the Silver Line Station and trail.

Unfortunately, a group of Addison Circle residents and one city council member with concerns about construction and business impact were able to effectively cancel the full bike lane project through Addison Circle. These concerns were absolutely valid, but are solvable through good design and an efficient construction schedule. Additionally, bike lanes are  proven to increase not only street safety for everyone, but also improve business outcomes, especially in food service.

While concerns are understandable, they are solvable, and the town has the solutions already!  Addison Circle is uniquely positioned to reap numerous benefits from world-class bike infrastructure.

(Note: This Petition was started by Tyler Wright, a member of the Addison Planning & Zoning Commission. As bike lanes are not generally related to the scope of the Planning & Zoning Commission, I am participating in this effort as a private citizen and resident of Addison Circle. I do not speak for the town or the commission in any official capacity and all opinions are my own)
