Restore the Harare Chieftaincy: Recognise the Mbari Clan

The Issue

For 45 years after independence, Harare remains the only city in Zimbabwe without its rightful chief.

The Mbari clan, the royal custodians of Harare, were displaced by colonial forces in the 1890s. To this day, their chieftaincy has not been restored. This is a unique injustice — every other clan in Zimbabwe is settled and recognised, but the Mbari remain scattered, unable to perform traditional and spiritual ceremonies on their ancestral land.

Without restoring the Harare chieftaincy, Zimbabwe’s spiritual and cultural balance is incomplete.

We call on the Chiefs’ Council and the Ministry of Local Government to:

1.      Restore the Mbari chieftaincy in Harare.

2.      Allow the Mbari clan to perform traditional and spiritual duties on their land.

3.      Correct this colonial-era injustice and restore dignity to Zimbabwe’s capital.

4. Ammend Zimbabwe’s Constitution to enable Harare to have Chieftaincy

Why this matters:
Harare is not just a commercial city — it is sacred land. Ignoring its traditional leadership has contributed to instability, accidents, and unresolved spiritual crises. Zimbabwe’s future depends on respecting its cultural foundations.

We demand urgent action. Restore the Mbari chieftaincy now.
