Restore the Full Liquor License for Root44 Market & Wine Emporium #GetBeerBack
The Issue
Our community of over 77 traders and their 150 staff at Root44 Market & Wine Emporium are part of our extended family. We rely on the vibrant environment that the wine emporium uniquely brings with its array of liquors, attracting tourists and locals alike who support our livelihood. These courageous traders and dedicated staff have been with Root44 for many years, building on its charm and character. However, the restriction to wine only on our liquor license threatens to take that away, affecting not just our livelihoods, but also the local economy.
With our full liquor license, Root44 was able to host an array of beverages that drew in a diverse set of clientele. The restriction of this license not only threatens our business but dulls the unique charm of Root44.
Using Global Data's study, markets like Root44 contribute to gastronomy tourism, which accounts for more than 88 million global travelers. In particular, the wine industry plays a critical role in attracting 27 million tourists annually. By restoring our full liquor license, Root44 can continue to play its part in our local economy, attracting tourists and supporting jobs.
Therefore, we call upon the appropriate authorities to review and restore the full liquor license of Root44 Market & Wine Emporium immediately. Sign this petition to support our appeal and aid in preserving the livelihoods of our traders and their families.
Background:
In September of 2020 a Land Use Application was submitted to the Stellenbosch Municipality in order to change the usages so that Root44 could apply for a full liquor license. A TIA (Traffic Impact Assessment) was required and showed that the traffic congestion at the intersection is mainly due to the natural growth and background network traffic. In October 2023 the application was declined. We appealed, it went to tribunal and the mayor conducted an oral hearing in April 2024. In September 2024 the appeal was rejected. (In February 2023 the WCLA approved the full liquor license pending a favorable outcome from the mayor).
