Restore senior housing at 1111 Father Capodanno Blvd

Restore senior housing at 1111 Father Capodanno Blvd
The Issue

Midland Beach, Staten Island, has long been a community that values its history, its people, and its sense of unity. For over two decades, 1111 Father Capodanno Blvd served as a beacon of hope and comfort for our senior citizens, offering them a safe haven in their golden years. However, in recent times, this once peaceful establishment has been converted into a DHS family shelter, a transformation that has left many in our community feeling unsettled and unheard.
One of the main concerns of the Midland Beach residents is the expiration of the DHS family shelter contract (ID: CT107120248803565), which is due for renewal in September–October 2026. This contract has transformed a building that was home to our community's seniors into a temporary residence for families in need. While we empathize with the plight of these families, the location and the original intent of the building as a senior housing facility make it unsuitable for this new purpose.
For 23 years, from 1999 to 2023, the facility was a proud fixture of our neighborhood, providing exceptional senior assisted living services. This history cannot be ignored, and it is imperative that we restore the building to its original purpose. The community's vision is clear: transition families currently residing in the shelter to alternative, compliant shelters that can better serve their needs.
Furthermore, by selling the property to a reputable senior housing operator, we can ensure that 1111 Father Capodanno Blvd returns to serving our elderly population — providing them with the care and dignity they deserve. This decision will not only honor the legacy of what the facility once stood for but will also restore a sense of normalcy and pride to our neighborhood.
We respectfully call upon Council Member David Carr and all relevant authorities to take the necessary steps to do right by the people of Staten Island. Join us in our cause to end the current shelter contract and restore senior housing. Sign this petition to make your voice heard and help us bring back what our community truly values. Let us stand together to ensure a better future for our seniors and our neighborhood.
