The Issue

On April 22, 2025, Sean Patrick Kelly made a horrible mistake by lashing out at a disruptive patron during a screening at the TIFF Lightbox. Sean is on the autism spectrum, which can affect his judgment during high-stress situations. Sean has accepted his punishment for the incident, which has suspended his TIFF Membership and removed him from the TIFF Volunteer program.

Sean was told that his TIFF accreditation status would be a separate decision and that he was free to still apply. On July 25, 2025, Sean felt great relief when he received an approval e-mail seemingly confirming his media accreditation from TIFF.

TIFF Media Accreditation Approval

However, this approval was rescinded a few days later when Sean received another e-mail saying that he was, in fact, not approved.

TIFF Rescinded Approval

Sean feels that the extent of TIFF's punishment, which also includes a threat of a permanent ban, is too severe and discriminatory to his status as a neurodivergent individual. While TIFF's Code of Conduct states that it has zero tolerance towards violence, it should also provide accommodations under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act for people who don't always have control of their actions.
