Restore Safety & Functionality to W 31st St and Shoal Creek Blvd b/w N Lamar and 34th St!!
The Issue
Community feedback overwhelmingly supports replacement of the pilot, with permanent placement of pedestrians on the EXISTING sidewalk, traffic calming, and sharrow markings for cyclists.
- School pick-up/drop-off, school buses, fire trucks, ambulances, trash pick-up, mail delivery, and commercial delivery CANNOT function with both pedestrian and bike traffic in the street. A raised path along the south side of the street, where 2x the number of driveway conflicts exist, is dangerous and impractical.
- The results of Austin Transportation Department’s most recent survey were clear: Stakeholders expressed STRONG SUPPORT (over 3 to 1) for street designs which place pedestrians on an expanded design of the EXISTING SIDEWALK on the north side of the street, affording them far greater protection than when placing them IN the roadway. Cyclists enjoy a safer, speed-controlled roadway with far fewer pedestrian-pet and pedestrian-stroller conflicts.
- The proposed bike connection to 31st Street east of Lamar is impractical for all ages and abilities given the steep slope.
St Andrews School, residents and businesses in the W 31st / Bryker Woods / Heritage Neighborhoods have worked collaboratively with ATD and City Staff over the past four years. We thank Council Members Alison Alter and Zo Qadri for supporting a solution that works for everyone, including the school, faculty, staff and neighbors who work and live on this street.
Please support the work done by all parties to achieve this outcome.
Sign this petition NOW to restore SAFETY, BALANCE and FUNCTIONALITY to this neighborhood street.
