Restore Rehearsals to the Chan Shun Concert Hall

Restore Rehearsals to the Chan Shun Concert Hall
The Issue
For the last 25 years, the students and ensembles of the UBC School of Music have had the privilege of rehearsing in the esteemed Chan Shun Concert Hall. However, following some significant operational changes, including a change in administration at the Chan Centre, this tradition has been abruptly discontinued. We have been relocated to the much smaller Telus Studio Theatre, and the impact of this decision has been quite unsettling.
The change of rehearsal venues may seem like a minor adjustment, but for us, it presents numerous challenges. The Chan Shun Concert Hall is iconic, and it embodies an acoustic environment conducive to learning and perfecting the art of music. In contrast, the Telus Theatre's design and soundscape are not meant to accommodate large ensembles, potentially causing hearing damage due to excessive sound in a confined space.
UBC School of Music has always been a nurturing ground for musical excellence, and the Chan Shun Concert Hall is an integral part of this journey. The acoustics in the concert hall are unparalleled, allowing us to truly appreciate and refine the subtle nuances of our performance. Depriving students of this opportunity not only impacts their current learning experience but could have long-term effects on their careers as musicians.
The redistribution of resources to move back into the Chan Shun Concert Hall is necessary. We need to ensure that the next generation experiences the same formidable environment that has supported the careers of so many before us. The administration must recognize the importance of these facilities, not just as performance venues but as daily classrooms and workshops integral to our education.
The students should be provided the best possible environment for musical education. We urge the Chan Centre administration and leadership to prioritize student needs and restore our rehearsals to the Chan Shun Concert Hall. Reinstating this rehearsal space is crucial for maintaining the standard of excellence associated with the UBC School of Music.
Join us in this endeavor and help ensure that current and future students receive the opportunities they deserve. Please sign this petition to advocate for the return of our ensemble rehearsals to the Chan Shun Concert Hall.
