Restore Recycling to NW Valley

The Issue

BRING RECYCLING BACK TO ALL OF MARICOPA COUNTY!

Local recycling programs have been struggling pretty much everywhere lately.

Well, we finally have some good news!

The proposed WestWing Recycling & Transfer facility will make recycling possible again in more of Maricopa County in places like Surprise, and it will help communities like Peoria ensure their recycling programs will continue to serve future generations.

RECYCLING’S COSTLY HISTORY

Some communities like Flagstaff and Tucson had to scale back their recycling programs. Cities like Phoenix and Scottsdale had to raise rates, passing the extra costs on to residents.

And in other cases, cities were forced to eliminate recycling altogether. After 15-years, the City of Surprise shut down its popular recycling program in 2019, due to insurmountable costs. At the time, more than 37,000 Surprise households were participating in the program.

It’s sad. Not just because we should care about our amazing preserves, hiking paths and environment in the county. It’s sad because recycling benefits everyone – from our kids to seniors. Recycling matters to local businesses – ask them – their customers and employees expect it. Recycling is even good for the local economy, helping to create jobs and tax revenues.

THE WESTWING SOLUTION

The WestWing Recycling & Transfer Facility would be located in an existing industrial park just north of the Loop 303 Freeway and south of the West Wing Power Station. This location will keep trucks off local roads and away from nearby homes.

It means no cost to residents because the private sector – Arizona-based Republic Services – plans to pay for the construction and ongoing operation of the facility. And it will mean savings for surrounding cities, helping local governments keep the costs of recycling programs affordable for everyone. Most importantly, it helps keep Maricopa County clean and green now and in the future.

ACT NOW

Thousands of residents and businesses are already supporting this project.
