Restore purity and fairness in temple practices - Take back temples from Devasam Board
The Issue
My recent visit to the sacred Guruvayoor temple, a cherished spiritual destination, left me with deep concerns about the current management and practices. I had hoped to partake in the traditional 'choroon' ceremony for my daughter, envisioning a cherished memory. However, the experience was marred by an unexpected denial, citing my daughter’s age as a barrier to partaking in a special queue reserved for babies and parents. At 2 years old, my daughter was deemed ineligible because the privilege was limited to those under one year. The dismissive attitude of the temple staff, seemingly treating the temple as their private property, further soured this sacred occasion.
The Guruvayoor temple, alongside many others, has seen the infiltration of bureaucratic dominance wherein the Devasam Board and government wield excessive control, often influenced by political interests. This stranglehold has led to the dilution of our rich cultural and spiritual traditions, converting them into profit-centric activities. One glaring example is the "Ghee Darshan," where devotees are charged exorbitantly at Rs. 1000 for a single person and Rs. 4500 for a group of five, with claims of discounts that seem disingenuous. Such commercial practices are not supported by any ancient scripture or traditional evidence, nor do they align with the deity Guruvayoor Appan’s teachings of equality and spiritual accessibility.
The introduction of new and unnecessary practices is driven purely by monetary gain, undermining the sacred essence of temple rituals. Devotees are treated as ever-flowing sources of revenue rather than pilgrims seeking divine blessing. This commercialization of spirituality is disheartening, and it jeopardizes the sanctity of our temples.
Furthermore, there are alarming incidences of Sabarimala theft, including a recent significant gold theft case linked to sabarimala temple insiders, highlighting the issues of corruption and mismanagement. This not only tarnishes the reputation of our sacred institutions but also erodes the trust of devotees who expect integrity and transparency in temple operations.
It is time to push for a change. We must urge the government and temple management to reduce political and financial influences on temple activities. We demand the return to prioritizing spiritual sanctity over monetary benefits, reinforcing age-old traditions free of exploitation. Institutions must ensure fair access to divine blessings, irrespective of financial standing, and maintain transparency to prevent corruption.
Join me in calling for the preservation of our sacred spaces' purity and authenticity. By signing this petition, you are voicing for a restoration of fairness and spiritual devotion in temple management practices. Ensure that our temples remain places of reverence, untainted by financial and political agendas. Sign now and support a return to genuine spiritual values.
