When asked to explain the decision, he offered no policy justification, telling reporters, "No reason... I don't want them in my office. I don't want them here."

This is not the first time a press outlet has lost access under this kind of pressure. The Associated Press was barred from presidential events, a decision still being fought in court, and CNN's Jim Acosta had his press credentials pulled during Trump's first term before they were restored months later. A pattern like this raises a bigger question than any single outlet's coverage: whether a president can decide, without explanation, which journalists are allowed to do their jobs.

CNN has said its reporters remain in the White House and continue traveling with the vice president, calling any ban "an illegal assault" on constitutional rights. Politico has said it will "vigorously defend" its First Amendment rights. Access to the White House press corps should not depend on whether a president likes the coverage he receives. When journalists can be shut out simply for asking hard questions, the public loses the ability to see how its own government operates, regardless of political affiliation.

Restoring access is not about defending any one network. It is about defending the basic principle that the White House press pool must remain open to accredited journalists doing their jobs.
