Restore Play-Based Kindergarten: End Mandatory Academic Benchmarks for Five-Year-Olds
The Issue
Children are being pushed into formal academics before they are developmentally ready, and it's costing them their love of learning, their mental health, and their childhood.
Kindergarten was never meant to look like this.
Across the country, five-year-olds are expected to sit for long periods, complete worksheets, meet rigid academic benchmarks, and prepare for standardized testing, often with little time left for play, movement, imagination, or rest. This shift toward early academics is not developmentally appropriate— and it is harming our children.
As a former school principal and an advocate for families, I've seen firsthand what happens when we push children too early:
-Rising anxiety and school refusal
-Increased behavioral issues
-Early labeling of children as "behind," "disruptive," or "disordered"
-A loss of joy, curiosity, and confidence in learning
Research consistently shows that young children learn best through play, movement, exploration, and meaningful relationships, not formal instruction and testing. Many countries with stronger academic outcomes delay formal academics until age six or seven. Yet in the United States, expectations have moved in the opposite direction.
Kindergarten has become first grade, and our children are paying the price.
This is not a call to eliminate school, undermine teachers, or lower standards. It is a call to honor child development and restore kindergarten to what it was always designed to be: a gentle, play-based bridge into learning.
We are calling on school districts and state education boards to:
-Protect the child first, prioritizing what we know about early childhood development by aligning kindergarten expectations with developmental research
-End mandatory academic benchmarks in kindergarten
-Eliminate standardized testing in kindergarten
-Prioritize daily time for play, movement, outdoor learning, and creativity
-Restore professional autonomy to kindergarten teachers to use developmentally appropriate, play-based methods
-Stop all academic labeling in kindergarten
Children are not failing kindergarten, kindergarten is failing children.
Families deserve the freedom to trust their child's development. Teachers deserve the freedom to teach in ways that actually work. And children deserve a childhood that isn't rushed, pressured, or reduced to data points.
Let kids be kids.
Let learning unfold as it was meant to.
Let kindergarten be kindergarten again.
