Restore Performance Patches for PHSMSB

The Issue

This is more than an appeal; it is a heartfelt plea from the hearts of every Pittsburg High School Marching band member. For us, our performance patches that we receive at the end of the season are cherished mementos of our commitment, sacrifice, teamwork and dedication. The patches not only represent our achievements but also our shared memories, experiences and the unique bond we have created through music. Especially when we know we’re not guaranteed a spot the next season, at least we have proof to say we were in the legendary Pittsburg High School Marching Show Band. Recently, many band members were disheartened, to say the least, to learn that we would not be receiving these patches for our 2023 performances.

According to The National Association for Music Education, the inclusion of symbolism through mementos such as patches can significantly enhance pride, commitment and cohesion among band members. These patches serve as visual indicators of accomplishment which can foster motivation and ambition among band members.

I felt that I needed to do something since I remember being a freshman, getting patches at the end season for performing for the warriors, something so crazy I couldn’t believe it. I almost cried knowing that I had something that I could show people forever. Being apart of this band has given me confidence and opportunities I have never thought possible. Knowing that we will not get our warrior performance patches, or fleet week, or whatever else we had done that earned a patch that season is very disappointing.

Among the band members I talked with, we all thought that the director had ordered the patches a bit late and they were still in transportation. We all know how busy Ms. Martinez is so we decided not to bug her but to wait. When graduation arrived and the patches had not everyone was wondering what had happened. Unfortunately we asked too late, the director informed us that the graduating class had decided they didn’t care much for the patches. The graduating class of that season does not speak for the band as a whole so we hope to show Ms. Martinez that we feel differently about the patches than the seniors do. At the end of the season, we looked forward to getting our patches and hope we can continue to.

This is why we, the Pittsburg High School band members, strongly feel the loss of this tradition.

We are not merely asking for the reinstatement of the performance patches; we are asking for the preservation of our cherished tradition, our team morale, and our shared sense of achievement. We therefore urge our band director to reconsider this decision and help us maintain this meaningful tradition, for us and the future members to come. I know that this seems irrelevant or not important compared to other things. Yet I ask that you show your support, whether a person from the community or a current member every vote makes a difference.
