Restore Pei Wei at Arizona State University

The Issue

Pei Wei was my absolute favorite restaurant in the Memorial Union (MU) at Arizona State University, and I know it was favored by most people I know as well. That's why the sudden decision to replace it with Spaghetti Shack has left a bad taste—not just in my mouth, but in the mouth of many students who cherished the Asian-inspired flavors of Pei Wei. It's disappointing to see Arizona State University make such a drastic change to our campus dining options, especially in a way that feels as though it's whitewashing the diverse culinary landscape that students value.

The dining choices available on campus play a vital role in shaping the university experience. For many ASU students, Pei Wei was more than just a restaurant; it was a place where we could find flavorful and fresh Asian dishes that fit our lifestyle and dietary preferences. With the increasing diversity of our student body, it's crucial for the available food options to reflect the global and multicultural makeup of our campus community.

Moreover, Pei Wei is not just a random choice for many; it offers a variety of dishes that cater to different tastes, dietary restrictions, and nutritional needs. From their famous Mongolian beef to their delicious tofu dishes, Pei Wei satisfied cravings while providing a balanced meal. This change to Spaghetti Shack seems to simplify and narrow our dining options rather than celebrating the variety that we students crave.

By reverting back to Pei Wei, Arizona State University can continue to promote diversity through its food outlets and support students who may feel disheartened by the current shift in offerings. It's a small but significant step in ensuring that our university remains a place where all students feel represented and satisfied—culinarily and culturally.

Join me in asking ASU to bring back Pei Wei to the MU. Let's remind our administration how important it is to preserve a dining experience that aligns with the diverse palates and preferences of its students.
