Restore Park Rangers in Channel Islands National Park and Los Padres National Forest

The Issue

I live close to the idyllic landscapes of the Channel Islands National Park and the Los Padres National Forest, both of which provide invaluable open spaces for us to enjoy. However, I am deeply concerned by the noticeable absence of park rangers whose role it is to monitor, preserve, and educate visitors about our national parks' rich environment. Rangers play an essential part in maintaining the parks' health, safety, and overall sustainability, a role which the National Parks Conservation Association confirms (NPCA, 2021).

Channel Islands National Park, for instance, which supports more than 2,000 species of plants and animals and offers unparalleled opportunities for camping, hiking, and wildlife-viewing, is suffering without its usual number of rangers (National Park Service, 2021). Likewise, Los Padres National Forest, a 1.9 million acre expanse with over 1,257 miles of maintained trails is not being given the attention it deserves in terms of ranger support (U.S Forest Service, 2021).

Returning rangers to their posts is not just about protecting our parks; it's also about safeguarding our community's wellbeing. Studies have shown a correlation between access to nature and improved mental health (Astell-Burt and Mitchell, 2013). Thus, maintaining these parks is key for public health purposes.

I implore you to join me and countless others in calling for the reinstatement of rangers in the Channel Islands National Park and Los Padres National Forest. Let's protect the places we cherish most, while reinforcing the importance of environmental education and stewardship. Please sign this petition today.
