Restore Panther Hollow Lake

The Issue

When Panther Hollow Lake was constructed in Schenely Park back in 1892, it was a popular gathering spot for people from all around Pittsburgh where they could enjoy going rowing in the summer, ice skating in the winter, and scenic views throughout the seasons. However, after many years of neglect, the lake's sediment built up making it unusable to the public.

Reportedly, the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy had adopted a plan to return Panther Hollow Lake to its former glory, including full restoration of the lake, rehabilitation of the watershed, and a reconstruction of the old boathouse. Nonetheless, tangible progress has yet to be made by the city.

Now, a group of students from the University of Pittsburgh's GEOL 1316 Environmental Justice class is seeking restoration of Panther Hollow Lake with utmost priority for the benefit of students, residents, and all members of the Oakland and Pittsburgh community.

Students from the Environmental Justice course have researched the lake's water quality and ecology and taken steps to raise awareness and reach out to public officials and stakeholders. Still, we need more help to achieve this.

Our plea is a call to action for the authorities and every community member. We request that immediate steps be taken to restore Panther Hollow Lake, including ecosystem enhancement measures, water quality monitoring, and more initiatives that improve the lake's health and streamline its renovation.

Together, we can help restore Panther Hollow Lake for everyone's benefit and ensure its longevity for future generations. Please join us in this mission by signing this petition to make our voices heard.
