When the Marblehead School District decided to alter the start times for the 2024-2025 school year, it disrupted the daily routines and wellbeing of countless students like myself. Previously, Marblehead High School commenced at 7:55 AM and concluded at 2:30 PM, a schedule that accommodated our natural sleep cycles and allowed us to begin our day with a nourishing breakfast. Unfortunately, with the current earlier start times, we have lost critical sleep, and many of us are forced to rush to school without eating. This change is detrimental to our ability to focus and learn effectively in classes.

Research has continually proven the importance of adequate sleep in adolescents. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), teenagers need between 8 to 10 hours of sleep per night for optimal health and academic performance. The American Academy of Pediatrics emphasizes that early start times are a significant barrier to that necessary sleep. By adhering to the previous starting schedule, we could better meet these health guidelines and enhance our educational experience.

Additionally, the extended school hours do not simplify our workload; they instead contribute to longer periods of mental strain without meaningful returns in educational outcomes. Our time spent in a classroom should be efficient and focused on quality learning rather than increased quantity without purpose.

Marblehead's former schedule was balanced and beneficial for students. It allowed us to make the most of our mornings, be active participants in class, and left us enough time after school for extracurricular activities, homework, and family time. By reverting to our old schedule, we can nurture our well-being and create a more effective learning environment.
