Restore Order and Reclaim Victoria Park for the Entire Community
The Issue
Restore Order and Reclaim Victoria Park for the Entire Community
Victoria Park is one of Cambridge’s most valued public spaces, a place meant for families, seniors, students, and neighbours to gather, relax, and feel safe. In recent months, growing concerns about disorder, safety, and the declining condition of the park have left many residents feeling unheard and uncertain about the future of this shared space.
We, the undersigned, are calling on the City of Cambridge to take meaningful, coordinated action to restore order, ensure consistent enforcement of park bylaws, and implement a long‑term plan that protects Victoria Park as a safe, welcoming, and well‑maintained public space for everyone.
We respectfully request that the City of Cambridge:
- Immediately terminate all cricket play in Victoria Park due to ongoing safety risks, repeated bylaw violations, and the clear unsuitability of the park’s size, layout, and proximity to public amenities for cricket activity. Continued allowance of this activity exposes the City to foreseeable and preventable liability.
- Require permits for any future cricket activity in Victoria Park should the City choose to allow limited, temporary use while a suitable long‑term location is secured for the Cambridge Cricket Club.
- Enforce all existing bylaws consistently to maintain safety, order and equitable access to the park.
- Increase regular presence and monitoring to deter disruptive, unsafe or non-permitted activity.
- Implement a clear, time-bound strategy for restoring and preserving the park’s condition, including remediation of damage caused by past cricket activity.
- Communicate transparently with residents regarding actions taken, enforcement measures, and next steps.
- Affirm Victoria Park as a shared community asset that requires active protection, responsible stewardship, and equitable access for all users.
Victoria Park belongs to the entire community. With decisive municipal action and strong resident support, we can restore this important public space and ensure it remains safe, orderly, and accessible for everyone who calls Cambridge home.
We urge the City of Cambridge to act without delay.
