The Issue

For nearly three decades, during the prime years of my life, I had the privilege and honor to work at Mangalore Chemicals & Fertilizers Ltd. (MCFL). This name was not just etched on my professional title but deeply ingrained in my heart and soul. To me, and countless other stakeholders like former & current employees, farmers, Mangaloreans & Kannadiga’s, people who parted with their land and families whose breadwinners laid their lives on duty, the name Mangalore Chemicals & Fertilizers represents more than just a corporate identity; it encapsulates the aspirations and dreams of a community that has nurtured it for over five decades.

In 1971, MCFL was established with the pioneering spirit driven by the Government of Karnataka and the investment of the regional farming community. It’s a shared legacy of land, water, air and the very people who have borne the brunt of environmental impact because It became a beacon of industrial growth, employment generation and innovation in Mangaluru, forging a bond of trust with the city and its people. However, with its recent rebranding to PPL post merger and the erasure of 'Mangalore Chemicals & Fertilizers' from its identity, this deep connection is under threat of being lost forever.

Let us remember the countless hours of dedication and labor that went into building MCFL, not only as a company but as a symbol of regional pride and potential. This was a company reflective of the hard work and determination of local farmers, employees, and investors who placed their faith in its success.

The three corporate entities that took reins of MCFL since 1991 in turns did not invest a single rupee during 35 years of their private ownership. They exploited MCFL for gain and no expansion was undertaken thus curtailing employee progression and job creation. So there’s no right for anyone to tamper with the historical name envisioned by local pioneers.

The heritage of MCFL cannot be dismissed and discarded by corporate decisions that ignore its historical and emotional significance. This is a call to action for every stakeholder, every former employee, and every Mangaluru resident who cherishes the legacy of MCFL—your voice can drive change.

We urge PPL to honor MCF’s origins, respect the sentiment of its community, and embrace its historical name as part of its corporate identity. Bringing back the name Mangalore Chemicals & Fertilizers is not merely a restoration of a title; it's a reclaiming of our shared history and identity.

Sign this petition and join us in demanding that 'Mangalore Chemicals & Fertilizers' is rightfully restored in the corporate identity of PPL, so that its legacy continues to inspire for generations to come. Our voices combined can make a difference. Let's stand together and ensure that our history is respected and preserved.
