Residents of Dora Street and Section Street in Mayfield are once again without residential mail delivery.

Australia Post has suspended delivery to our streets due to ongoing safety concerns relating to dangerous dogs in the area. This is not the first suspension, and the underlying issue has remained unresolved despite concerns being raised with City of Newcastle over a number of years.

We want our mail delivery restored, but for that to happen, the safety issue that has caused its suspension needs to be resolved.

We fully support Australia Post's responsibility to keep its postal workers safe. We are not asking workers to return to an environment that Australia Post considers unsafe.

We are asking City of Newcastle to take urgent and effective action to address the dangerous dog issues that are preventing Australia Post from safely delivering mail to our neighbourhood.

Residents who have nothing to do with the dogs or properties involved are now being denied a basic service because of a situation completely outside their control.

Households are being forced to make alternative arrangements to receive their mail. More importantly, if the situation is considered too unsafe for postal workers to enter the area, it raises an obvious concern for the residents, families, visitors and other workers who use these streets every day.

This has gone on for long enough.

We are asking City of Newcastle to act
We are calling on City of Newcastle to urgently address the circumstances that continue to make parts of Dora Street and Section Street unsafe for postal delivery.

We ask Council to:

1. Take appropriate action within its powers to address the dangerous dog issues that have resulted in the suspension of mail delivery.
2. Work towards a resolution that allows Australia Post to safely restore normal residential mail delivery to Dora Street and Section Street.
3. Provide affected residents with clear communication about what is being done to resolve the ongoing safety issue and allow services to resume.
4. Ensure this is addressed as a lasting community safety issue, rather than leaving residents to face repeated mail suspensions whenever the problem escalates again.

We recognise that dangerous dog matters can involve legal and regulatory processes, and that Council may not be able to publicly discuss individual cases. But after years of ongoing concerns and repeated disruption to the wider neighbourhood, residents need to see an effective resolution.

We want our mail back.

We want Australia Post workers to be able to deliver it safely. And we want residents of Dora Street and Section Street to be able to rely on City of Newcastle to address a longstanding safety issue that individual residents cannot resolve themselves.
