Restore Life Is Strange’s original creative voice with Don’t Nod

The Issue

Over the years, Life is Strange has developed a large and quite active fanbase due to the series’ unique art style, symbolism, high stakes decisions, and relatable characters especially to people apart of marginalized groups. Despite the beauty of this series, Decknine took over in the late 2010s. They’ve developed four games so far- Before the Storm, True Colors, Double Exposure, and the upcoming Reunion. Before the Storm was the best received by longtime fans due to Don’t Nod’s influence on it as a prequel, but even so, it has numerous weaknesses. The other games after it have made nowhere near the same impact. Deck Nine dropped the series’ beloved art style and replaced it with a minimalistic one. The graphics, logo, UI, decisions, and even more were affected by this. Double Exposure, the first game featuring Max in a decade, failed, resulted in major losses for Square Enix. This is attributed to Chloe Price’s absence, but this was not the only reason behind the low sales. Dialogue became forced, and Max no longer felt like herself. Decisions lacked the stakes previous games had, and the finale was anticlimactic to many. Following this massive failure, the next game, Life is Strange: Reunion, releases in March. This game features Chloe, and undoes the finality, symbolism, and meaning behind the ending of the first game by undoing Max’s final choice regardless of what you chose. This series is dying. That is why I made this petition to ask Square Enix to return the IP to Don’t Nod with full creative control. These recent games have not only been a disservice to many fans, but have caused major losses, and fans don’t want to see such an amazing series shelved simply because the identity of the series was lost between developers. Whether Don’t Nod created a game to retcon the Max Caulfield sequels, or started entirely new, I have no doubt it would be beautiful and return the series to what it once was.
