The Issue

Last week, I was horrified to see that Lake Ontario, a cherished natural landmark shared between Canada and the United States, was renamed as "Lake America" on Google Maps. This sudden change was baffling and distressing, as it seemed to be an endorsement of former President Donald Trump’s audacious and unfounded claim on this invaluable piece of natural heritage.

It feels as though my country, Canada, a proud and sovereign nation, is being invaded in the digital realm by a narrative driven by one person’s ego. What makes this situation even more alarming is that Google, a colossal transnational technology company, has chosen to support this misleading alteration. With a simple name change on their widely-used platform, they've inaccurately suggested that Lake Ontario, recognized worldwide for centuries, belongs to America alone.

Lake Ontario's name has deep historical roots and cultural significance. It's one of the Great Lakes that defines the border between Ontario and New York, a symbol of our shared natural wonders and cooperation. Renaming it undermines not only this symbolic relationship but also spreads misinformation that disregards the rich history and importance of Lake Ontario to both Canadians and Americans alike.

Accuracy and respect for sovereignty should be paramount in digital cartography. Allowing inaccurate representations to persist not only disrespects Canada but also diminishes the credibility of platforms like Google Maps. The integrity of information is essential, especially in our increasingly digital world.

Join me in urging Google to restore the name Lake Ontario globally on their map services, respecting the rich historical legacy and international acknowledgment of this great lake. Please sign this petition to preserve the identity and dignity of this natural treasure.
