Petition for Transparency in the American Cowboy Hat Industry

Consumers spend hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of dollars on cowboy hats without being told what they are actually buying.

Unlike many other consumer products, there is no industry-wide standard for the “X Factor” quality rating used by cowboy hat manufacturers. A 20X, 40X, or 100X from one company may represent something entirely different from the same rating used by another. In many cases, consumers have no practical way of comparing quality between brands or knowing the fiber content of the hat they are purchasing.

When buying clothing, blankets, or countless other products, consumers are told what materials those products contain. Cowboy hats should be no different.

Consumers deserve meaningful information before making a purchasing decision.

We are calling on the American cowboy hat industry to voluntarily adopt one of two simple solutions:

• Adopt a standardized quality rating tied to the grading system used by the hat body manufacturer; or

• Clearly disclose the fiber content of every felt hat sold.

Either solution would allow consumers to make informed purchasing decisions while preserving competition between manufacturers.

Why This Matters

This petition is not about telling consumers which brand to buy.

It is about giving them enough information to make that decision for themselves.

Transparency builds trust. Honest manufacturers benefit when consumers understand what they are purchasing. Retailers benefit by confidently standing behind the products they sell. Most importantly, consumers receive the information they deserve before spending their hard-earned money.

We Are Not Asking for Government Regulation

We are not asking for new laws or government oversight.

We believe the cowboy hat industry should be capable of holding itself to meaningful standards.

Unfortunately, the current system demonstrates that voluntary transparency has not become the industry norm. Inconsistent quality ratings and a lack of meaningful disclosure have left consumers to navigate a marketplace where identical quality claims can represent dramatically different products.

We believe the industry still has the opportunity to fix this voluntarily.

If it chooses transparency now, it can strengthen consumer confidence without outside intervention.

Our Request

We respectfully ask manufacturers throughout the cowboy hat industry to either adopt a standardized quality rating tied to the body manufacturer’s grading system or clearly disclose the fiber content of every felt hat they sell.

This petition is not directed at one manufacturer. It is a call for greater transparency across the entire cowboy hat industry.

Consumers have the right to know what they are buying before they spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on a cowboy hat.
