Restore Healdsburg Veteran's Memorial Beach
The Issue

On June 14, 1958, Healdsburg Veteran's Memorial Beach (HVMB) was dedicated to the residents of Healdsburg, CA, marking the beginning of decades of cherished memories.
Teens and families would gather to swim, relax, and enjoy the vibrant community spirit that flourished along the banks of the river.
This beloved tradition faced a tragic decline in the 1980s when climate crisis activists pushed to close down our cherished HVMB.
First they blamed closures on fish AS IF the off season dam interfered with spawning.
Then it was toxic algea hyperbole.
Then it was,"there's not enough waterflow" and I was told recently by admin at Russian RiverKeepers that they consider us (humans) to be an invasive species.
Because the County refuses to fully raise the dam and has restricted access to this once-vibrant recreational hub, our youth and families are deprived of a local treasure.
Rather than a sandy place of joy and community, it's an underutilized dirt, rocks, and mud swamp area infested by leeches.
It fails to honor its original purpose — a place of recreational swimming and togetherness.
We believe it’s time to restore the dam at HVMB by Memorial Day every year, ensuring safe and ample water levels for swimming.
Reopening the snack bar not only provides refreshments but also creates job opportunities for local teenagers, fostering responsibility and community pride.
Additionally, reinstating swimming and water safety classes, formerly run by the Red Cross, will empower our children with essential skills and strength and enrich their summer experiences.
Sign this petition to demand the necessary changes that will once again give Sonoma County teens and families a place to come together and enjoy our beautiful riverfront.
if Healdsburg was really interested in revitalizing the space as Mark Themig claims, it would already be done.
Thank you.
