The Issue
My son, a hardworking individual with a prosperous small business, holds a commercial driver's license (CDL), a boxing license, and supports a loving family. Yet, despite his achievements and contributions to society, he faces significant restrictions due to an old, non-violent felony conviction from over a decade ago. He was sentenced to 5-10 years with 3 years of supervision probation — a harsh punishment for a mistake from his distant past, in an otherwise spotless life.
This story isn't unique to my son. Thousands of individuals across the nation find themselves in similar positions. Despite having shown that they have reformed and become valuable members of society, they are prevented from exercising their constitutional rights to bear arms due to long-past non-violent offenses.
Restoring gun rights to these individuals is vital. Research has shown that individuals with old non-violent convictions rarely reoffend, particularly when they have integrated successfully back into society as law-abiding citizens. The current system fails to consider the strides these individuals have taken towards rehabilitation and redemption.
We propose a nationwide reform to address this issue. By introducing a mechanism for reviewing old, non-violent cases, and restoring gun rights to those who have demonstrated positive change, we can ensure a fairer justice system. Such a mechanism can include evaluating factors like time elapsed since the conviction, lack of subsequent criminal behavior, and contributions to society.
With many in possession of skills like my son's — credentials that demonstrate responsibility and good character — there is a clear injustice in denying them their rights. Let's stand together to advocate for a change in federal law and create a pathway for affected individuals to reclaim their rights, providing a chance for true rehabilitation and reintegration.
Please sign this petition to urge lawmakers and policymakers to consider reforms that will restore gun rights for individuals with old, non-violent convictions. Help us create a compassionate and just approach that recognizes the capacity for change and the importance of second chances.
