The Issue

As a parent of a child who plays in the Greater Cleveland County Soccer Association (GCCSA), I’m concerned about the recent changes to the soccer format for our 16-18u players. These young athletes, including my own child, signed up for full field soccer, expecting the traditional experience of playing with 11 players on a full-size pitch. Instead, they are now confined to half-field games, which not only limits their development but also takes away from the authentic soccer experience they deserve.

In the world of soccer, the transition to full-field play is a critical milestone that helps players develop tactical awareness, physical endurance, and a deeper understanding of the game. At ages 16-18, these players are too mature and physically developed to be constrained to such limited spaces. Many of these young athletes are looking to continue with soccer at a higher level, and full-field matches are integral to preparing them for future challenges in competitive soccer.

According to FIFA's guidelines, full-size fields and 11v11 matches are recommended for this age group to help develop players' skills effectively. The current set-up not only deviates from these standards but diminishes the appeal and competitive edge that full-field soccer offers. It also impacts the overall enjoyment and passion these young players have for the sport.

Restoring full-field play for the 16-18u division at GCCSA would involve returning to a model widely recognized by soccer organizations worldwide. This change can be executed effectively by reallocating field resources or rescheduling games to accommodate the larger field requirement. It’s about respecting the commitment that these players and their families have made to soccer and to one another.

I respectfully urge GCCSA to consider these factors and reinstate full-field soccer for our 16-18u teams. Let’s give our kids the platform they need to thrive, improve, and enjoy soccer at its full potential. Please support this petition to restore full-field soccer for our children and ensure they receive the enriching experience they initially joined the league for. Most of these players plan on playing soccer beyond high school, returning the field play to regulation soccer would only give them the opportunity to keep thriving in the game they love!

Please sign this petition today to help us bring back full-field soccer to GCCSA for our youth. Your support can make a significant difference in their sporting journey and passion for the game.
