Restore Freedom and Fairness to Michigan’s Cottage Food Producers

Restore Freedom and Fairness to Michigan’s Cottage Food Producers
The Issue
Picture this:
The Person who bakes the cinnamon rolls you grab at the farmers market.
The family down the road who sells jam from their front porch.
The neighbor who hands you a loaf of bread with a smile and a handwritten label.
These aren’t just side hustles. For many, they’re lifelines. And for thousands more across Michigan, they represent hope, purpose, and dignity.
What’s the problem?
Right now, a $25,000 gross sales cap blocks home-based food producers from growing.
That cap isn’t based on safety. It isn’t based on quality. It’s arbitrary, outdated, and unfair.
It doesn’t matter how hard someone works, how safe their practices are, or how high the demand is. Once they hit that number, they’re legally forced to stop.
Who are we talking about?
We’re talking about your neighbor.
Someone’s mom.
The grandma who bakes for every church event.
The people who:
- Bake with real butter
- Use Michigan-grown ingredients
- Care deeply about quality and safety
This is homemade. This is heartfelt. This is cottage food.
It’s not mass-produced. It’s personal, local, and full of love.
What do we want?
We’re calling on the Michigan Legislature to:
Pass HB4122 – raise the sales cap as a start.
Go further – fully remove the cap and replace it with simple, affordable state controlled registration.
Require Certified Food Manager training for consistent, beyond-hobby producers to ensure safety without limiting opportunity.
Why it matters
Cottage food producers are already feeding their communities safely. But more than that—they’re building relationships, trust, and connection.
Most of us don’t want to go commercial. We’re not chasing sterile storefronts. We want to keep it face-to-face. We want to keep it real.
We’re not asking for the world. We just want the freedom to keep doing what we love... baking good food, sharing it nearby, and making enough to do it again tomorrow.
Cottage food is a choice. A wholesome, community-rooted, people-first way of doing business. Michigan should support that—not punish it.
Let them bake. Let them earn. Let them thrive.
Sign this petition to bring freedom and fairness back to Michigan’s cottage food law.
This petition was originally intended for the Michigan House, but due to their swift and overwhelming support, we are now directing our plea to the Michigan Senate. It’s time they act in kind and pass this important reform for Michigan’s cottage food producers.
