The Issue

Jannat-ul-Baqi in Madinah is one of the most sacred sites in Islam.

It is the resting place of the family and companions of the Prophet Muhammad (saww), including four Imams of Ahl al-Bayt: Imam Hasan al-Mujtaba(as), Imam Zayn al-Abidin(as), Imam Muhammad al-Baqir(as), and Imam Jaʿfar al-Sadiq(as).

Today, this sacred site is treated in a way that causes deep sadness and pain to many Muslims.

What visitors are witnessing

Jannat-ul-Baqi is hidden behind a large wall, with shops and service buildings constructed directly in front of it, blocking clear view and access to the graves.

The area is dark, unmarked, and stripped of any sense of reverence, despite its immense historical and spiritual importance.

Visitors are not allowed to stand, raise their hands, or remain for respectful remembrance.

People are moved away suddenly, often under the excuse of “cleaning”, immediately after approaching the area.

Women are given extremely limited access times, frequently required to wait for men to leave before being allowed brief entry.

At the Prophet’s (saww) Mosque, a visitor who raised his hands in respect had his phone seized, footage deleted, and was physically assaulted by security personnel.

This is not respectful management of a sacred space.

It feels like systematic restriction and erasure.

In 1925–1926, the graves and structures of Jannat-ul-Baqi were destroyed. Nearly a century later, the site remains controlled, obscured, and neglected, rather than honoured.

Visiting Jannat-ul-Baqi is a sacred act of honouring those who shaped Islam.

Seeing it treated in this manner is heart-breaking for many believers.

This petition calls on the authorities to:

Allow dignified and respectful visitation at Jannat-ul-Baqi.

End harassment, rushing, and intimidation of visitors.

Provide fair, safe, and humane access for women.

Remove or redesign obstructive walls and commercial buildings that block the cemetery.

Recognise Jannat-ul-Baqi as a sacred Islamic heritage site, worthy of care and respect.

This is not about politics.

It is about memory, dignity, and respect for Islam’s history.
