The Issue

I am a minor and recently experienced something that has deeply affected me and many others in the dance community. On July 26th, two council officers issued us a warning while we were dancing and filming in Covent Garden. What troubled me most was seeing them take pictures of everyone involved, including minors like myself, without our consent. I’m not alone in this concern. Covent Garden has long been a beloved hub for dancers and performers of all types. It’s a place where creativity flourishes, where young artists can express themselves freely. For ages, this vibrant location has been the backdrop for countless dance routines and artistic endeavors. However, recent actions against us — based on vague complaints from a few businesses about potentially fewer customers — are unjust. In today’s digital shopping age, these grievances seem exaggerated. We are more than willing to move out of the way when necessary.

Friendships are being formed, and communities are being built here through dance. It’s not just about performing; it’s about freedom, expression, and community. Businesses claim their footfalls are declining due to us dancing, yet there's still bustling street activity, including other performers, just nearby on King Street, who don't seem to face the same backlash. It's concerning that the focus seems disproportionately directed at us dancers.

Moreover, the manner in which this issue was addressed by the council — photographing minors without consent — is unacceptable and raises serious privacy concerns. We need to protect our rights to gather, dance, and film in public spaces like Covent Garden. We urge relevant authorities to recognize the immense cultural value that our performances bring to the area.

Join us in urging the local council to reconsider their stance and restore the rights for dancers to practice and share their art in Covent Garden without fear of unwarranted intervention. Sign this petition to stand up for freedom, creativity, and the thriving Covent Garden arts community.
