Allow Silent Grounds Collective to Restore Historic Graves at St. Bernard Cemetery

A petition to the Archdiocese of Hartford, the Catholic Cemeteries Association, and the management and caretakers of St. Bernard Cemetery in New Haven.

The association lists St. Bernard’s in New Haven under its St. Lawrence Cemetery operation.

Every person deserves a peaceful resting place. Every generation deserves the opportunity to remember those who came before it.

Silent Grounds Collective, a Connecticut nonprofit organization, is asking for permission to help restore overgrown historic plots and damaged monuments at St. Bernard Cemetery in New Haven through hands-on volunteer work, community fundraising, and a coordinated preservation effort.

This cemetery holds an important connection to New Haven’s early Catholic and Irish immigrant communities. The people buried and commemorated here are part of our city’s history—not simply names on aging stones, but individuals and families whose lives deserve to be remembered. The Connecticut Irish-American Historical Society has documented that history in its study of New Haven’s Old Catholic and St. Bernard cemeteries.

New Haven’s first Catholic parish was established in 1832, with its original Christ Church building completed in 1834. That early community forms an important chapter in the city’s religious and cultural history.  Some gravestones from the old Christ Church burial ground were later moved to St. Bernard’s, preserving a connection to people commemorated in New Haven’s earliest Catholic cemetery, even where their remains were not relocated.

We are asking for the opportunity to care for that history before more of it is lost.

What we are asking:

We respectfully ask the Archdiocese of Hartford, the Catholic Cemeteries Association, and St. Bernard Cemetery’s management to meet with Silent Grounds Collective and establish a written agreement allowing an approved preservation project.

Our proposed work would include carefully 
•Clearing overgrowth around designated plots
•Documenting monuments and inscriptions
•Organizing appropriate cleaning, and raising funds for approved conservation and repairs.

Any stabilization, resetting, or structural repair of damaged monuments would be assessed and undertaken by appropriately qualified people—not treated as ordinary volunteer landscaping.

We also want to research and preserve the stories behind these memorials, including connections to early baptismal and burial records, so that the people represented here can be remembered as individuals rather than forgotten names.

All work would be coordinated with cemetery management, respect the cemetery’s religious character, and obtain any necessary permissions from plot-right holders or families. We are seeking permission to preserve graves and monuments—not to disturb human remains or undertake unauthorized work.

An offer of partnership
This petition is an offer to help, not an attempt to take control of the cemetery or place blame.

Silent Grounds Collective wants to bring volunteer effort, fundraising, and public support to a shared goal: restoring dignity to these historic plots and helping maintain a peaceful place for remembrance.

We propose beginning with a jointly approved group of plots, documenting their condition before and after the work, and developing a practical plan for continued care. Fundraising would support the agreed project, with clear communication about its purpose and use.

Our request is straightforward: work with us, approve a responsible plan, and allow our community to contribute.

Why your signature matters:

A damaged monument should not become the end of someone’s story. Overgrowth should not determine whose name remains visible. Whether a person has living descendants nearby or no one left to visit, their resting place still deserves respect.
