Restore City of Canterbury Council Creating a New Inner South-West Council in Sydney
The issue
This is a petition for the proposal of a restoration of City of Canterbury Council into a new well defined Inner South-West Council directed at The Office of Local Government NSW which is something that is well overdue for residents in Sydney's Inner South-West. This will highly benefit residents financially and cater towards growing needs in the local community.
The boundaries of the proposed council will be Cooks River to the north, Fairford Road, Stacey Street, Hume Highway and Salt Pan Creek to the west and Wolli Creek and The M5 to the south. This would incorporate most of the former City of Canterbury Council with the postcodes of 2191, 2192, 2194, 2195, 2196, 2206 as well as parts of 2208-2210 and 2193 with the addition of parts of 2190 and 2136. Postcode 2133 and most of 2193 which were within the former City of Canterbury Council would be omitted. Roughly this area would correspond with the electoral districts of ‘Canterbury’ and ‘Lakemba’ collectively. This council would have the population of approximately 180,000.
The proposed suburbs within Sydney’s Inner South-West Council include:
City of Canterbury-Bankstown
(2190) Greenacre
(2190) Mount Lewis
(2191) Belfield
(2192) Belmore
(2193) Canterbury (South of Cooks River)
(2194) Campsie
(2195) Lakemba
(2195) Wiley Park
(2196) Punchbowl
(2196) Roselands
(2206) Clemton Park
(2206) Earlwood
(2208) Kingsgrove (North of M5)
(2209) Beverly Hills (North of M5)
(2209) Narwee (North of M5)
(2210) Riverwood (North of M5)
Strathfield Council
(2136) Strathfield South (South of Cooks River)

The NSW liberal government had Sydney amalgamation proposals and mergers back between 2013 and 2017 with many former councils being forcibly amalgamated into some mega councils we have now named after their regions rather than the suburb from which they started while other traditional councils were left untouched due to conflicts of interest and legal action taken.
The amalgamation that took place regarding Sydney’s Inner South-West was merging the former City of Canterbury Council with City of Bankstown Council to form the current unnecessarily large City of Canterbury-Bankstown. While these two councils were within Sydney’s South-West they are not the same as City of Canterbury mostly existed in between Sydney’s Inner West and Sydney’s Southern Suburbs, mostly falling within the northern portion of The Parish of St George above Wolli Creek and The M5 but below The Cooks River. City of Canterbury also could be deemed with the title of Inner South-West while City of Bankstown may be closer to the city than other parts of Sydney’s South-West in Liverpool City Council, however it is still too far to be worthy of the inner metropolitan title.
Suburbs like Greenacre (2190) and Mount Lewis (2190) which were formerly within City of Bankstown would be included into a new Inner South-West Council being within the stated boundaries along with Strathfield South (2136) which has always been part of Strathfield Council in Sydney’s Inner West. Suburbs that were within the former City of Canterbury Council like Ashbury (2193), Hurlstone Park (2193), part of Croydon Park (2133) and the northern portion of Canterbury (2193) which are all north of The Cooks River would be omitted.
Some possibilities of what to do with the remainder of City of Canterbury-Bankstown would be to restore most of the former City of Bankstown or merge these suburbs with Liverpool City Council to create a South-Western Suburbs Council, merge all of Croydon Park, Ashbury, Hurlstone Park and the northern portion of Canterbury with the amalgamated Inner West Council, merge southern portions of Beverly Hills, Narwee and Riverwood below the M5 with the amalgamated Georges River Council or a new Southern St George Council.
This proposal is to get The Office of Local Government NSW to change things for the better in the community, closer to where they should be historically, culturally, geographically, demographically and socio-economically. Sign this petition if you agree.
