Restore City of Botany Bay Council in Sydney

The issue

This is a petition for the proposal of a restoration of City of Botany Bay Council directed at The Office of Local Government NSW which is something that is well overdue for Botany residents. This will highly benefit residents financially and cater towards growing needs in the local community.

Two possible logical alterations to restoring City of Botany Bay would be to give the small portion of Rosebery (2018) that’s south of Gardeners Road to City of Sydney which already has most of Rosebery and to also include all of Port Botany (2036) which is an industrial suburb next to Banksmeadow that currently belongs to Randwick City Council. Including Port Botany into a restored City of Botany Bay Council will put Sydney Airport, The Botany Industrial Park and all of Port Botany in one council. This council would have the population of approximately 60,000.

The proposed suburbs within a restored City of Botany Bay Council include:

Bayside Council

(2018) Eastlakes
(2019) Banksmeadow
(2019) Botany
(2020) Mascot
(2032) Daceyville
(2035) Pagewood
(2036) Eastgardens
(2036) Hillsdale

Randwick City Council

(2036) Port Botany

The NSW liberal government had Sydney amalgamation proposals and mergers back between 2013 and 2017 with many former councils being forcibly amalgamated into some mega councils we have now named after their regions rather than the suburb from which they started while other traditional councils were left untouched due to conflicts of interest and legal action taken.

One council amalgamation that occurred which was never supported by the community on both sides and is still confounding to most residents today was the forced merger of City of Botany Bay with Rockdale City Council to form the current unnecessarily large Bayside Council. The two councils were separated by Botany Bay and Sydney Airport with both existing in separate areas of Sydney, Rockdale City Council being part of Sydney's Southern Suburbs in The St George Region and City of Botany Bay being within Sydney's Inner Southern Suburbs and Sydney's South-Eastern Suburbs around the airport.

Other plans that almost occurred involving City of Botany Bay was merging it with the other neighbouring councils of City of Sydney or Randwick City Council as well as the larger ambitious plan of collectively merging the five councils of City of Botany Bay, City of Sydney, Randwick City Council, Waverley Council and Woollahra Municipal Council into one mega inner metropolitan council. Most of these plans however were scrapped with residents on all sides not favouring any of these proposals and with other plans to merge Randwick City Council with Woollahra Municipal Council and Waverley Council as well as City of Sydney being deemed sufficient in population and size to remain as it was, the liberal government clearly saw no other option than to merge City of Botany Bay with Rockdale City Council with the only thing they had in common being their encompassing of Botany Bay. Rockdale City Council’s neighbours of Kogarah City Council and Hurstville City Council got amalgamated into the current Georges River Council which residents of Rockdale favoured being apart of over a merge with City of Botany Bay.

While Bayside Council in its current form is simply referred to as a 'Southern Sydney Council' it really spans across the three regions of Sydney's Southern Suburbs in St George, Sydney's Inner Southern Suburbs and Sydney's South-Eastern Suburbs with all three being divided by Sydney Airport, Botany Bay, Southern Cross Drive and Mill Stream.

This proposal leaves the question of what to do with the remainder of Bayside Council with the most obvious solution being restoring Rockdale City Council in the same fashion as City of Botany Bay being restored. Some other possibilities that make sense from a region and boundary perspective which could also appease the local community if Bayside Council were to be dismantled would be to give the western side within the former Rockdale City Council to The Georges River Council to form a complete Southern St George Council, give the central part of Bayside Council in between The Alexandra Canal and Southern Cross Drive to City of Sydney to form a complete Central & South Sydney Council and to give the eastern portion of Bayside Council that falls east of Mill Stream and Southern Cross Drive to Randwick City Council to form a complete South-Eastern Suburbs Council.

This proposal is to get The Office of Local Government NSW to change things for the better in the community, closer to where they should be historically, culturally, geographically, demographically and socio-economically. Sign this petition if you agree.
