The Issue

CDC has recently terminated key programs addressing cognitive disabilities and sickle cell disease - a painful blood disorder that in 90% of cases affects Black families.

It was done by order from Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

These cuts have sparked widespread concern among healthcare professionals and advocacy groups, who emphasize the critical role these programs play in supporting vulnerable populations - particularly people of color.

"If it is not restored, it will disrupt life-saving public health programs, halt critical research, and increase preventable hospitalizations, complications, and deaths," said Dr. Belinda Avalos, president of the American Society of Hematology.

We urge the CDC and the Department of Health and Human Services to:

1. Restore the programs and staff dedicated to cognitive disabilities and sickle cell disease to ensure continued support and research.

2. Collaborate with advocacy groups and healthcare providers to address the needs of individuals impacted by these conditions.

The health and well-being of countless individuals depend on these essential programs.
